We took a break from the countryside to walk around Kumamoto Castle downtown. I like going there even though we've been there dozens of times. It is one of the three major castles in Japan and has recently undergone major renovations, including the reconstruction of numerous buildings that were destroyed during the 1877 civil uprising. I like the details of all the intricate carpentry and stonework, the simplicity of the designs and the clever engineering. We enjoyed walking around for the afternoon. Tomorrow I'll be making New Year's o-mochi.
