The good news is that a lot of the broad leaf weeds have suffered from the sudden freeze. Their limp and lifeless leaves are a welcome sight. One less weed to whack. The bad news is that our unheated home is as cold, or maybe even colder, than it is outside. When I'm here alone, I hate to use the gas to heat the place so I'm bundled up in front of the computer, pretending it is a heat source.
Obachan shared some mikan (mandarin) oranges with us and asked me to do something with the grass or weeds or dumping or frankly, I have no idea what she was talking about. I'll have to take a walk around and see if there is something that needs to be done. So far, the wheat is happy with the cold snap and it looks like most of it has sprouted. The carrots are growing uncomfortably large, some of them growing together into multi-fingered monsters. The daikon are the size of clubs. I only hope the frost slows the snails and caterpillars down because they are eating the spinach and Napa cabbage faster than we can.
I've been working, bit by bit, on the village story. I am learning how little I know about this place and the people I've lived with for twenty years.

I loved your funeral description.... As i read it, i felt my knees begin to ache as muscle memory kicked in and seiza cramps gripped my calves....
I miss you lately - it's the season for appreciating good friends. Where would I be without you!?!
