Wheat Crushing

We are doing this rather late in the season but with holidays, rain and whatever, we didn't get it done. This is wheat crushing time. I don't know the agricultural term and am not really sure of the rationale but we use heavy steel rollers attached to our rototiller to flatten the little wheat sprouts and press down the soil; then between the rows, we plow, throwing some soil up to cover the sprouts with extra soil and at the same time creating a drainage canal. How much soil should cover the sprouts, how much of a canal is needed and how much weight should be applied are all up for debate. I've observed several farmers these past couple of weeks and everyone is doing is differently. Some people ride the rototiller without the blades guiding the rollers like a horse but we prefer the slow method, painstakingly walking up and down the rows.
