Little Melons Mark the end of Summer

This is a small melon of the Canary Melon variety but smaller and less fleshy than the ones sold commercially. It was hidden in a thick tangle of weeds and vines. My mom-in-law sent me on an expedition. She said she'd forgotten what she had planted in the little plastic tarp hut so just to look around and see what I could find. Well, I found a snake, a giant centipede, some dried garlic, a couple of squishy onions and a few of these yellow melons. She says they are a vegetable and to be eaten in salad. My daughter calls them a fruit and eats them plain. They are not quite as sweet as a fruity melon but definitely sweeter than a cucumber so call them what you will! In Japanese, they say uri. Ijust slice it up in wedges, remove the skin and seeds, and serve it like fruit. It was also nice mixed in a cucumber salad with a light rice vinegar dressing.
