Disaster in rice paddy

Just when everything seemed to be going well... the farmer who rents the neighboring field threw some kind of herbicide on his weeds. Enough of it was carried in the wind and landed in our field, poisoning our plants. We have to contact the JA to see if there is any insurance coverage for such a case or if we should sue him (of course, law suits are a rarity in Japan) for damages. He had a bucket of some dark powder and was throwing it by handfuls onto his field of weeds. You can see the uneven splotches of brown weeds. I think once it landed in the water, the rice began to die. Our other fields are fine. In fact, with the rainstorms and hot sunny days, the rice plants are thriving this year, so indeed, it was a shock to see this.

Sigh. This field produces a couple thousand dollars worth of rice, so this is not a good event. All in all, very discouraging.
