Farm days in September

Back on the farm: it’s time to sow daikon (the big white radish) and broccoli and some of the cool weather greens like spinach, all the leafy greens, cabbages and such. The last of the eggplants just made their way to my kitchen, a few straggling bell peppers that were not very bell-shaped and kabocha, the green-skinned orange fleshed pumpkin that feels like it should be served as a winter dish but is very abundant right now.

The nights are getting cooler (thank goodness) but it is still hot in the daytime. It hasn't rained for a few weeks, which is rather unusual although there have been thunderclouds on the horizon. The dragonflies are out in force giving the early evenings a kind of a prehistoric dinosaur-age feel to the air –not that I personally remember the age of the dinosaurs but I do have an imagination. My neighbor was walking with an umbrella –it was neither sunny nor rainy and so I asked why she had it - to protect her from the dragonflies. That’s new.
