We had to race against the rainy weather to spread lime on the fields before plowing. The usual way is to dump a 20kg sack of lime compound into a "backpack" and wave a hose around as you walk up and down the fields. (See video if you don't believe me!) The "new" way is to dump all the sacks into the back of the pickup truck and as the driver races through the field hitting bumps and turning sharply, while the fool in the back of the truck goes "swish swish" with a little home-made broom made of straw and tries to distribute the lime evenly without falling out of the truck. We plowed the lower field (size= one tan) the upper field (two tan) and the two small fields. Once the contract expires on our other fields, we will farm those. It isn't that much but since the dirt was so sticky and damp, it stuck to the wheel and blades and made the going very slow.
The reason I didn't do it sooner is that we were waiting for the neighbor to use his big slicer wheel attachment to score the field with deep slashes to improve the drainage and hence the harvest potential. The wheel is called dangan. It looks like a weapon out of "Mad Max".
I sprayed the lawn with lawn care and herbicide - I hate to do it but until we get it under control again, there just is no other way. Let's see if that helps for winter. I finished painting the front door but ran out of paint so I can't do the backdoor. The sample of green for the trim is much too bright but I trimmed the front door anyway because it looks extra festive for the holidays. (Log house, red door, bright green trim- it's like the cabin of some giant elves.)
