It was an absolutely gorgeous day to work outside digging sod yesterday. Clear skies, cool air, no bugs, frosty morning - it doesn't get better than this. I know I should have plowed the hatake for the potatoes but I wanted to do the sod. My bad judgment. In the evening, a summery low-pressure system moved in bringing high winds and torrents of rain. All night we were hammered with either big gusts that sounded horrific or pelleting rain against the windows.
This morning was the calm after the storm - if you arrived this morning you would not believe that there had been anything but peace during the night. The birds were all cheerily singing, the air was fresh, everything looked greener and cleaner. Being outdoors after a storm is like just brushing your teeth with minty toothpaste- those first few breaths are so clean! But now the ground is too soggy to plow - I have missed my potato planting deadline and feel like a failed farmer.
I will rotate the compost heaps and clean up the dead leaves and branches and wait for the soil to dry.
